Tottenham Hotspur's defender Cristian Romero was swiftly substituted right after scoring a goal against Brentford at the Community Stadium on Sunday.
Romero celebrated netting the ball following a precise free-kick delivery from James Maddison from the left side. The goal, occurring in the 11th minute, was confirmed after a VAR review. However, Ange Postecoglou, the newly appointed manager for the season, promptly signaled for a substitution, asking the Argentine player to leave the pitch.
Visibly disappointed, Romero left the field to be replaced by Colombian center-back Davinson Sanchez.
The reason behind Romero's substitution:
In the 3rd minute of the match, Romero had a collision of heads with Brentford's winger Bryan Mbeumo. After a brief check by Tottenham's medical team, he returned to play. It was initially speculated that his substitution was due to a possible concussion from that earlier clash, which was followed by his goal scored with a header.
However, it was later clarified that the substitution was a precautionary measure to prevent further injuries to the center-back, not specifically related to a concussion.
Interestingly, the FIFA World Cup winner had concluded the previous season with an injury and had not participated in Tottenham's last Premier League game against Leeds United.
Despite taking the lead, Tottenham was unable to maintain it. Brentford equalized from a penalty, with Mbuemo contributing to the scoresheet, and Yoane Wissa secured a lead for the Bees just ten minutes later.
Spurs are ushering in a new era under the leadership of Postecoglou after a tumultuous 2022-23 season that witnessed three different managers, including Antonio Conte, Cristian Stellini, and Ryan Mason.
